I build cool stuff

Construction gets under way at the University Cooperative School with the creation of the stairwell.

We needed to cut a great big hole in the concrete where the stairwell would eventually be built. This was not an easy task, the cuts had to line up perfectly with the beams below and they had to look good. The cut concrete will be what you see when the stairwell is done.

Thank goodness I had Tex. Tex is not from Texas, he’s from North Carolina, and he is definitely the most over-educated concrete cutter I’ve ever met. (I believe he has both a physics and medical degree. Go figure.) I had Tex core some exploratory holes to locate the beams and walls below. Using these holes we laid out the cuts on the top of the concrete slab and then Tex went to work.

Our engineer required that we not over cut the corners of the stairwell opening. This isn’t easy to do with an enormous concrete saw, but Tex came up with a clever solution. He simply cored large holes in the corners before he made the saw cuts. You can see a picture of a finished corner below.

Concrete cutting is not an exact science, but our cuts turned out perfect. You could see on the bottom side of the cuts that the saw blade had just skipped along underneath the paint and right next to the beam.

Yee haw!
